How Horses Teach What Classrooms Can’t
The real horse-power behind Equine Assisted Learning.
Have you ever sat through a workshop or training day, clutching a lukewarm coffee, and wondered if anything you were hearing would actually stick? You aren’t alone. We’ve all been there, nodding along, only to head back to work and slip right into the same old habits.
If you are longing for a job that leaves a lasting impression, not just on your resume but on the lives of others, it may be time to stop looking at screens and start looking at the arena.
At Dreamwinds Equine Assisted Learning Centre, we love helping people find a path that feels meaningful, hands-on, and genuinely life-giving. If you’ve been dreaming of turning your passion for horses into a rewarding career, but you’re tired of traditional “sit-and-listen” training, let’s talk about why EAL certification feels so different in the best possible way.
The 90% Rule: Why Experience Beats the Lecture
The statistics are pretty eye-opening. Research into learning retention shows that traditional lecture-style teaching, the kind you find in most workshops and seminar settings, results in a retention rate of only about 10-20%. That means a lot of what you paid to learn can fade quickly once the day is over.
Now compare that to experiential learning. When you are actively involved, solving real-world problems and receiving immediate feedback, retention rates can climb to 65-80%.
In our EAL Facilitator Certification, you aren’t just sitting there taking notes. You are in it. You are learning by doing, reflecting, adjusting, and discovering what actually works through hands-on, objective-based exercises. And when you graduate, you’re equipped to have the same kind of memorable, life changing impact on your clients.
The ‘Silent’ Leader: Feedback Without the Ego
One of the most powerful parts of this program is the horse itself. We often call the horse the Silent Leader. In a traditional workshop or training room, feedback is often filtered through human bias, office politics, or the fear of hurting someone’s feelings.
Horses don’t have an agenda.
They don’t care about your job title, your salary, or your history. They respond and react solely to your energy, your clarity, and your authenticity in the moment.
It is important to understand a key distinction here. We don’t look at it as the horses mirroring you. Mirroring implies a passive reflection. Instead, horses respond and react to the stimulus you provide. If you are inconsistent, they react with confusion. If you are clear and confident, they respond with trust. This honest, unbiased feedback is what creates the “aha!” moments that traditional coaching simply can’t replicate.
As EAL graduate, Betty, shared: “The horses did not judge, they did not ridicule, they did not pick favorites, they merely reacted in ways that lead an individual to realize in their own way… that there are different ways of thinking/doing things.”
You Don’t Need a Farm to Have a Career
One of the biggest barriers we hear from people considering a career pivot into EAL is: “But I don’t own a farm,” or “I’m not a professional rider.”
Let’s clear that up right now. You can be confident that you don’t need to be an Olympic equestrian to succeed here. In fact:
- No riding experience is required. All of our EAL activities are ground-based. You will be working with the horses face-to-face, not from the saddle.
- You don’t need to own horses. Many of our successful graduates started their businesses by renting local facilities or contracting with existing barns.
What You’ll Actually Experience in the Training
When you choose Dreamwinds, you aren’t just getting a certificate.
