Identifying Your Purpose and Path as an EAL Facilitator: What to Consider Before You Begin…
Becoming an Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) facilitator is more than just a career move—it’s a calling. Working alongside horses to help people develop personally and professionally is a deeply rewarding journey. However, before you dive into this exciting field, it’s essential to take time to define your purpose and shape a path that aligns with your values and strengths. Here’s how you can begin identifying who you want to serve and what you should consider to build a fulfilling career as an EAL facilitator.
1. Reflect on Your Passion and Purpose
Before starting your certification journey, ask yourself why you’re drawn to EAL. Is it a passion for personal development? A desire to help people overcome challenges? A drive to facilitate leadership and team growth? Your motivation will guide your path and help you decide the type of facilitator you want to become. A great place to start is where you passion and life experience intersect.
Take time to explore what excites you about this work. Do you want to focus on mental health and emotional well-being, leadership, or family relationships? The more clarity you have on your “why,” the easier it will be to define your offerings and connect with the people who need your unique skills.
2. Identify Your Ideal Audience
Once you’ve connected with your purpose, it’s time to determine who you most want to serve. The EAL field offers a broad range of opportunities—you can work with individuals seeking personal growth, corporate teams improving leadership, or even families and youth building life skills.
Who do you feel called to help? Understanding your target audience allows you to tailor your programs to their specific challenges and goals. This step is crucial in creating a meaningful and effective program that resonates with your clients and will guide you as you research EAL Certification paths. Choosing a certification that is flexible and enables you to create an environment and experience that your clients will love is critical.
3. Leverage Your Strengths and Unique Skills
Every facilitator brings something unique to the table. Reflect on the strengths and skills you’ve gained in previous roles. Whether you come from a corporate background, a therapeutic setting, or have extensive experience with horses, your skills will shape your approach to EAL.
For example, I came from a corporate career and I have a passion for developing leaders and building high performing teams. So for me, corporate team building was the perfect place to start. If you have experience in mental health, you might focus on emotional wellness and resilience. Your background will influence how you structure your program and what kind of clients will be drawn to you.
4. Research the EAL Industry
Understanding the EAL landscape is a key step before certification. Research current industry trends and demands, and explore how EAL is applied in different areas. This will help you position your services effectively and fill any gaps in the market.
Reach out to other EAL Facilitators to see what their experience is like. Shadow programs to see what resonates with you and aligns with your personal goals and values. Any reputable EAL Certification school will be able to connect you with graduates who are happy to share their experience. Whether you want to offer corporate team-building sessions, personal growth workshops, or programs for families, being informed about the industry will give you the knowledge you need to stand out.
5. Prepare for Personal Growth
Becoming an EAL facilitator is not only about helping others—it’s a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Working with horses and guiding clients through transformative experiences will challenge you to develop greater self-awareness, refine your leadership skills, and grow in ways you may not expect. Prior to certification, prioritize hands-on experience with horses to ensure you can confidently and safely guide your clients in their interactions with your amazing EAL horses. Immerse yourself in the learning process alongside the horses, as this will help you better connect with your clients’ experience.
Remember, the path of growth never ends! Embrace this journey as one of personal growth, knowing that as you evolve, so will your capacity to help others.
